Mr. Md Moniruzzaman Saddam

Senior Associate & Deputy Head of Shipping Dept (Dry)


Mr. Md. Moniruzzaman Saddam, is a recent addition to our Firm, having joined in 2024 with over seven years of experience in Admiralty and Shipping related matters, following his overseas engagement at a reputed Law Firm in Dubai where he was involved in various shipping and marine insurance issues including but not limited to the drafting and legal vetting of sale and purchase agreements for maritime vessels, Charterparties agreement and other commercial agreements relating to maritime law. 

He is the deputy head of the Shipping Department (Dry) which is ranked under Shipping by Chambers and Partners 2023 Asia Pacific Guide.  The editorial says: “Rahman’s Chambers has a specialist shipping law practice in Bangladesh, covering the full scope of maritime issues including ship arrests, marine insurance, bills of lading and admiralty. The team is also active on collision cases, often representing international P&I clubs and shipping companies….”

He is also a senior member of the International Department. The department’s international work is recognized under Corporate & Finance by Chambers and Partners 2023 Global Guide. The editorial says: “They are professional, and their team is well organised to assist us with complex and sophisticated matters.”

Mr. Md. Moniruzzaman Saddam completed, LLB (Hons) (2016) from the University of Anglia Ruskin (Cambridge) & LL.M in International Maritime Law from Swansea University, UK in 2017. Before joining the Chambers, Mr. Saddam had legal experience working at a reputed Law Firm in Dubai handling solely Admiralty and Shipping-related matters and disputes, and another reputed and leading law firm in Bangladesh before that. Due to his far-reaching and overseas experiences in the Admiralty and Shipping Department to help assist our International Department, particularly concerning admiralty/shipping-related international arbitration, he was recruited as a Senior Associate of the Chambers.

He is a Senior associate and a member of the Supreme Court Team.

Shipping  

  • Drafted shipbuilding contract between Narayangonj Engineering & Shipbuilding Ltd. (NESL) and Bashundhara Group involving the building of tanker/cargo/LPG vessels at the respective party’s shipyard using yard site, infrastructure, equipment’s, administrative and other services.
  • Provided legal consultancy to Intraco Lines Ltd and drafted joint venture agreement formed between Intraco Lines Ltd and CGFK Trading Co. Ltd.
  • Drafted plaint/application in admiralty suit filed for MV Magnum Force against Bangladesh Navy.
  • Drafted plaint/application in admiralty suit filed for MV Mim Supramax Vivi against MV Asad-2, MV Halicapnassus V & MV Amazonit.
  • Drafted Plaint in admiralty suit filed by Integrate Fuels Inc. against Port Fuel supplies Co. relating to supply to MV Ocean Glory.

International (Arbitration – Shipping) 

  • Represented UK P&I Club and the owner of M.V. SUPRAMAX VIVI in a collision matter which took place in Bangladesh but the Parties chose Singapore as a forum and decided not to appear before Bangladesh Courts. As Bangladesh counsel we worked together with HFW, an international law firm and were actively involved in advising, drafting petitions based on private international law principles challenging the jurisdiction of Singapore.
  • Advised Bunge S. A., Switzerland involving claim for hire by disponent owner in relation to cargo discharged in Bangladesh on different aspect of applicability of local arbitration laws in an international arbitration pending in LMAA.
  • Successfully assisted Komrowski Maritim GMBH on several aspects of international arbitration pending before LMAA and GMAA in disputes involving the shipbuilding contract between Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Ltd vs. Komrowski Maritim GMBH, Germany

Organisation Plan 

A associate lawyer is an experienced member of a Team, senior to/promoted from the post of Junior Associates. They assist the Chambers with legal research, fact analysis,  coordinating with clients on procedural issues. They also prepares legal opinion, draft pleading and finalise the same under the supervision of  the senior colleagues. The Exec of a branch assist the management team with day to day management of that branch.
