HYBRID SEMINAR ON THE CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL SALES OF GOODS

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) is considered one of the core international trade law conventions, universally desirable for adoption.

Presently, 97 countries, including the USA (1988), Germany (1991), Denmark (1990), most EU countries, Japan (2009), Russia (1991), Australia, China (1988), Singapore, Brazil (2014), Bahrain (2014), Canada, Congo (2015), and Madagascar (2015), have ratified the CISG.

It provides harmonization of laws on international sales of goods among member countries, ensuring that buyers, sellers, domestic courts, regulatory authorities, banks, and carriers understand their rights and liabilities without unnecessary complexity.

Bangladesh’s economy is diversifying its exports. The leather sector is recovering, while the garment industry is finding success in new markets. Government incentives aim to boost these trends and reduce reliance on a single sector. However, businesses must stay updated with the latest laws and regulations.

Smooth commercial transactions and international trade require strong legal support. Conducting due diligence on the terms and conditions of sales contracts or pro-forma invoices, understanding international trade law, and determining suitable INCOTERMS are essential to avoid disputes.

We will highlight the provisions of the Convention and discuss why the CISG is important for Bangladesh.

Key Topics:

  • Overview of the CISG and its applicability to Bangladesh
  • Key provisions of the CISG and their practical implications
  • Dispute resolution under the CISG
  • Best practices for drafting international sales contracts
  • The role of INCOTERMS in international trade
  • Case studies and real-world examples

The seminar will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join either physically or virtually. Please note that physical participation is limited.
